Exploring the Aura River Valley

In the Aura River Valley and along its trails, there are many ways to get around. Studies show that just spending half an hour in nature can reduce stress. Being in nature, even for short periods, is beneficial, whether you’re moving in any way or simply doing nothing at all.

Walking allows you to move at your own pace while taking in the surrounding nature. When walking, it’s easy to focus on small details as you can stop and engage all of your senses. In addition to walking trails, the river valley also offers excellent terrain for orienteering, more energetic jogging, and trail running. From the national online service Retkipaikka, you can find various routes and information about their features, such as fire pits and accessibility. Once you know the right route, all you usually need to begin your hike are weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes. Most destinations are also easily accessible by public transport, even without your own car.

Cycling is a great way to see more in one go. The cultural landscape of the Aura River Valley spans the entire valley, not just the nature trails. Cycling allows you to experience the river valley as a whole — the Aura River flowing through the middle, surrounded by meadows, fields, forests, as well as farms, barns, and historical sites. By bike, you can cover longer distances quickly and visit multiple destinations, many of which also serve as good rest stops. The Aurajoentie Tourism Route follows the Aura River from end to end and is well suited for a longer cycling route or a multi-day adventure. In the summer, the cycling event Tour de Aurajoentie is also organized — you can find up-to-date information on the Aurajoentie website.

However, perhaps the best way to explore the nature of the Aura River and its banks is by water — by canoe, SUP board, or boat. When traveling on the river, you can get closer to riverside nature, and the dense vegetation along the banks does not hinder progress. Even familiar views of the Aura River Valley look different from the water. Rapids can be bypassed using designated docks and paths. When planning a paddling trip, it’s important to consider points where you may need to carry your vessel so that you can choose a route suitable for your strength and skills. You don’t need to own your own canoe or kayak — they can be rented, for example, from the Myllärintalo summer café. For more information about paddling on the Aura River, click here.
