Our Unique Aura River

The Aura River originates in Oripää, from the springs of Tuomistonsuo, located on a gravel ridge. Starting as a small stream, the river gradually grows and meanders through Oripää, Pöytyä, Aura, Lieto, Kaarina, and Turku before emptying into the Archipelago Sea. The total length of the river is approximately 70 kilometers. Along the way, several tributaries and drains join the river, increasing the volume of water flowing through it. In the center of Turku, the river is on average about 50 meters wide. The depth of the river varies significantly, as the water flows through several shallow rapids and deeper riverbeds. The Aura River has 11 major rapids and numerous smaller flow areas. At its shallowest, the river can be crossed with rubber boots, while at its mouth near the sea, it can harbour even larger vessels.

The Aura River has long given rise to settlement and culture along its banks. The earliest signs of human habitation along the river date back to the Iron Age. Since then, the riverbanks have developed into church villages, agricultural lands, and industrial areas. Over time, all of this activity along the river also led to pollution and other issues, which have been addressed through long-term restoration efforts. Today, the Aura River holds significant value for the region’s residents, and it is used for a variety of recreational purposes. In addition to its valuable cultural history, the Aura River area is rich in natural heritage. The riverbanks host a wide variety of natural habitats, making it an important environment for many species. The river’s natural beauty is further enhanced by rapids, riverine forests, and the traditional landscapes of pastures along the banks.
