Project description:
The Invasive Species VEX Project focuses on Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) and yellow fringed waterlily (Nymphoides peltata) in the Aura River area. The project's objectives are:
Raising awareness: Identifying Himalayan balsam and yellow fringed waterlily and understanding their impacts.
- Invasive species volunteer work: Tackling Himalayan balsam infestations in the Aura River area through collective efforts.
- Data collection and production: Developing research and educational materials on Himalayan balsam, yellow fringed waterlily, and their control.
Volunteer work and participation opportunities:
The open Thursday volunteer events, started in the summer of 2024, will continue in 2025. Information will be provided on the Aura River Foundation’s website and social media channels (@aurajokisaatio). Invasive species volunteer events are an excellent way for companies, associations, and private individuals to participate in conservation efforts. An expert involved in the project guides participants in the control tasks.
Project coordinator:
Io Karunen, a biology student at the University of Turku, who has previously worked at the Aura River Foundation in invasive species and other projects during 2021–2023. She has played a key role in organizing the Himalayan balsam volunteer events held in summer 2024.
