Aura River water levels unusually low – winter flow very low

Water levels in the Aura River are currently unusually low. At the Hypöistenkoski monitoring station, flow is very slow, and in Turku the low water level is visible, for example, in some river vessels tilting.
The low winter flows are mainly caused by cold temperatures, low precipitation, and water being stored in snow and ice. Such conditions can affect ecosystems, river traffic, and water quality:
  • Ecosystems: Low water levels and ice cover can limit fish habitat and oxygen availability.
  • Infrastructure and traffic: Low water levels can hinder river navigation and water supply.
  • Water quality: Reduced flow decreases the river’s capacity to dilute pollutants.
