Myllärintalo cellar available as a cultural interim space – open for visits on 13 January, 1–2 p.m.

The cellar of Myllärintalo, located in the idyllic surroundings of Halinen rapids in the Aura River valley, is included in the City of Turku’s call for cultural interim spaces. The protected potato cellar dating back to the 19th century offers an exceptional setting for art projects and cultural events.

The historic cellar building has remained in its original condition. There is no electricity, lighting, or heating, which gives the space its distinctive and inspiring atmosphere. The entity is complemented by wall areas in the attic of Myllärintalo and by the courtyard, which may be used where appropriate as part of the activities.

Turku is seeking an artist or community interested in organising workshops, exhibitions, or artistic processes in cooperation with local actors. In addition to the Aura River Foundation, Valkkimyllynkuja 2 hosts Kanoottikuningas paddling services, Kakkupuoti, and MariAnnikka café. Collaboration can help create diverse cultural content by the Aura River.

You can visit and explore the space on Monday 13 January 2026, from 1 to 2 p.m. During the visit, more details will be provided about the character of the premises, terms of use, and possibilities offered by the riverside environment.

  • Address: Valkkimyllynkuja 2, Turku
  • Period of use: 1 June–20 September 2026, by agreement for about 1–3.5 months
  • Restrictions: the premises cannot be used for public audience activities on Mondays and are not accessible

The space is rented out in its current state and must be returned in the same condition at the end of the rental period. As the cellar is a protected part of Turku’s industrial and residential history, permanent alterations to the structures are not permitted.

The cellar continues the cultural heritage of the Aura River

The Aura River has long been a place where work, everyday life, and culture meet. The Myllärintalo cellar carries this tradition forward by offering room for creative action in the middle of a living river landscape. Bringing culture to the riverfront can help strengthen people’s relationship with the Aura River environment and its past. Artistic events and community activities can highlight the river’s role today as a place of experiences and encounters – not only as nature but as shared urban space.

We hope that the activities emerging in the cellar will enhance the vitality of the area and support the diverse invasive species and environmental work in the Aura River valley. Jointly organised events can invite new audiences to engage with the protection and sustainable use of the Aura River.
