Thursday Volunteer Work – together in nature, for our shared environment

Thursday Volunteer Work began in summer 2024 on the initiative of volunteers, when funding for Himalayan balsam control was temporarily paused. Those involved wanted to make sure the efforts of previous years would not be lost – and at the same time, a new open volunteer tradition was born.

The core idea has been to offer an easy, low-threshold way to take part in nature stewardship. We meet weekly at the same time, in easily accessible locations along the Aura River. No prior experience is needed – guidance is provided on site, and everyone can participate according to their own abilities.

In 2025, the activity expanded in cooperation with the Turku Nature Society, Elävän kulttuurin Koroinen and the City of Turku. This collaboration brought many new participants and broadened the work from Himalayan balsam removal to other types of nature management.

For many, the volunteer days have offered more than practical conservation. They are an opportunity to learn to recognise invasive species, spend time outdoors, and meet new people. One volunteer described the experience like this:

“It was a great way to get out into nature with others and do something meaningful. The best part was the good atmosphere and seeing the impact of the work right away.”

What began as a small group of volunteers has grown into a welcoming community that is easy to join – even just to try it once. Many participants have brought along a friend, and working together is one of the best ways to inspire others to get involved.

We will share the dates and locations for the summer 2026 season as soon as they are confirmed – hope to see you there. 💚
