Funding source: The project is funded in collaboration with the ELY Centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment). The Archipelago Sea Protection Fund also acts as a co-financier.
Area of operation: Entire area
Project description:
The Aura River Foundation, established in 1993, promotes the protection of the cultural landscape of the Aura River, water protection, and research activities. The ongoing project focuses on reorganizing water protection efforts for the Aura River and activating work related to the Archipelago Sea as part of the Archipelago Sea Program. The program aims to reduce nutrient load and improve the condition of the water body. The Aura River is a significant source of nutrient loading, with nearly 70% of its load originating from agriculture.
Project goals
- Develop a watershed plan for water management, water protection, and aquatic ecosystem restoration.
- Enhance collaboration with local stakeholders.
- Reduce nutrient load and improve the ecological condition of the water body.
Work Packages
- Watershed Plan: Prioritize effective water protection measures such as constructing wetlands, restoring peatlands, and naturalizing agricultural drainage. The plan will be supported by expert and stakeholder workshops.
- Activation and Stakeholder Work: Promote cooperation with landowners, municipalities, and other stakeholders, as well as organize workshops and public events.
- Communication: Increase the project's visibility and inform stakeholders about its impacts and benefits.
- Implementation of Measures: Select three pilot sites where the effects of water protection measures will be tested.
Project Coordinator
The project is coordinated by Project Manager Jussi Saari.
