Join our volunteer paddling patrols in the Aura River this summer
The Aura River Foundation is looking for volunteers to help inspect the covers installed in the Aura River to control yellow fringed lily as part of the Keltalammikki VEX project.
Inspections take place once a week throughout the growing season, starting in week 24 (from 8 June onwards). Volunteers will check the general condition of the covers and ensure that they remain in place and afloat.
The patrols start from Halistenkoski (Valkkimyllynkuja 2) and follow the river past Vanhalinna in Lieto, continuing almost as far as Vääntelänkoski.
No previous experience required
Patrols take place on weekdays, Monday to Thursday, in groups of 2–3 people. You are welcome to sign up on your own, as groups will be formed from participants.
Previous paddling experience is not required. What matters most is an interest in helping local nature and a willingness to take part in monitoring the covers.
There is no need to commit for the entire summer. Even a single patrol is a valuable contribution to the project.
Why are the covers being inspected?
Yellow fringed lily (Nymphoides peltata) is a rapidly spreading aquatic plant. In the Aura River, it is being controlled using covers that block sunlight from reaching the plants. The aim is to weaken the plant’s growth and develop an effective control method for flowing waters.
Regular inspections are an important part of the project. They help ensure that the covers remain in good condition and continue to function as intended throughout the growing season.
