Aura River calls you to fish – vote for the project in Turku’s participatory budgeting

The voting in Turku’s participatory budgeting is open from 1–31 May 2026. Residents decide which of the proposed projects will be implemented next – and among them is also the Aura River Foundation’s proposal Aura River calls you to fish.

Bringing river nature closer to residents

Aura River calls you to fish is a year-round fishing-related project that brings the fish species and river nature of the Aura River closer to city residents. The activities would focus especially on the Halistenkoski area and the main river channel, and would be open and free of charge for everyone.

The aim of the project is to increase understanding of life in the river beneath the surface and to inspire people of all ages to explore fishing and river nature in a sustainable way.

Events and activities throughout the year

A diverse programme could be organised across different seasons. Spring would begin with an ice break-up event combining an immersive light and sound experience with expert talks. In addition, traditional whitefish jigging (lippa fishing) would be introduced in spring.

From spring to autumn, monthly guided tours at fish passes would continue, presenting fish migration and the species of the Aura River. In summer, the programme would include a Fishing Buddy pilot, where children and families could try angling, as well as a Baltic Sea Day roach fish festival.

In autumn, the focus would be on migratory fish and trout. Public events would highlight their life cycle and the importance of fish passages. In addition, a live camera following trout spawning could be implemented during the spawning season.

Cooperation and sustainable fishing

The project would be implemented in cooperation with the Fisheries Region of Southwest Finland and recreational fishers. It would make use of existing sites and support children’s and young people’s connection to nature as well as sustainable fishing practices.

Vote and make an impact

In the participatory budgeting process, all Turku residents who turn at least 13 years old during the current year are eligible to vote. Each person may vote for up to five proposals.
